Judy Utter lost her daughter, Jennifer just a week after losing her step daughter, Gayle. It was on the night of Gayle’s funeral when Jennifer was killed. Jennifer had asked to go to a party, her mother did not want her driving that night, so she was with her friend Jeff, who had been drinking at the party. They left the party to take her home. In the process he drove 75 miles per hour into a utility pole, resulting in Jennifer’s death. The crash was just a mile from her Sacramento home.
Judy was devastated when she received the news that her daughter was killed that night. The offender, Jeff, received a concussion from being thrown from the vehicle on impact. Jeff received 90 day suspended jail time, 5 years on probation, his driver’s license was suspended till he turned 21 and 500 hours of community service.
This crash was in 1990, today California laws are stricter. In honor of her daughter Jennifer, Judy has dedicated herself to MADD, educating teens and parents about the dangers of drunk driving, helping other families cope with their loss due to this 100 % preventable crime.
